This past week has been mired in tragedy, but as Mr. Rogers once said in these troubled times: “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” This is why I’m choosing to take a moment to focus on Private 1st Class Glendon Oakley Jr.
He was off duty when a child approached him at a sports store near the Wal-Mart where the shooting took place and said there was an active shooter. He didn’t believe the child at first, but upon leaving the store he heard the chaos.
Oakley jumped into action and grabbed as many children as he could that were by themselves, rushing them to safety.
“I just thought about keeping them as close as I could – times like this, don’t be scared to put others before yourself. That’s the way I was raised.”
Oakley wants the focus to be more on the victims than himself as he did what he was trained to do.
Still, I think there’s something to be said of the people who do what ‘needs to be done’ in these situations, the people who are there to help, the people who act in the interest of others, which is why he’s getting a spot of my #MCM.
There’s so much more to be said about this situation, but I’ve chosen to land here for now.
